Make your winter vibrant with art, nature study, literature, and creative writing! Winter workshops (for children aged 8-13) open next week. Please visit the Winter Workshop schedule page for more on all workshops.

snowtreesIntroduction to Literature, Composition, & Creative Writing, a weekday morning workshop, is a new Literature-themed workshop offering children 9-13 deep readings of classic poetry, short fiction, and essays and practice in expository and creative writing. (This will continue as Session II into spring.)

Nature Studies in Art & Natural History, also a weekday morning workshop, is a Natural History, Art, and Nature Writing workshop for children 8-13. Fauvist/Expressionist and Botanical Art.

Evening after-school workshops include a return to the popular Exploring Art in Math and Nature workshop from Spring 2015–where we studied and painted and sketched Fibonacci spirals and fractals in Nature; we’ll continue our explorations there in this season’s Exploring Art, Math, & Music in Nature as we expand into the study of harmonics and crystal symmetries. (This workshop was on offer last fall but didn’t run, based on enrollment; hopefully this time around, it will run–if you sign up!)

Create Your Own Stories, Short and Long is an evening story-writing workshop where we’ll read and write both short storiesDaniella-Leaves and start a longer work. For children who like to write stories and want to hone and deepen their storytelling skills, ages 9-13.

New! Impromptu French is an open/free evening workshop for all current enrollees in these workshops, where the teacher revives and revisits her French as she introduces children 8-13 to basic French grammar, reading, conversation, and writing through books, readers, picture books, music and other videos.

universeFinally, our Fall workshops are here! We’re excited to announce new daytime workshops in science, art, and writing for home-schoolers this Fall, in addition to evening after-school workshops in art and poetry. Update Nov 5, 2015: Please note, Fall workshops continue into Session II for November and December, new dates on the Fall Workshops page; classes have started but remain open for new registration for 3 weeks.

The Universe Today, a weekday morning workshop, is an Astronomy and Expository Writing workshop for children 8-13.

Nature Study, also a weekday morning cloverworkshop, is a Botany, Art, and Nature Writing workshop for the same age group.

Evening workshops feature a Part II return to the popular Exploring Art in Math and Nature workshop from Spring 2015–where Fibonacci-fractal-art2we studied and painted and sketched Fibonacci spirals and fractals in Nature; we’ll continue our explorations there and expand into the study of harmonics and crystal symmetries.

Also on offer is a Poetry wemoto water crystalorkshop for Wednesday evenings–Reading and Writing Poetry/From Around the World.

Fall workshops will run in two sessions, Sep/Oct and Nov/Dec. Session I workshops are listed currently. Session 2 workshops will be posted shortly.

As the weather gets chilly and the nights seem longer, escape into worlds of magical color and form, create words and rhythms of your own as you explore the writing of poems, stories, and essays.

Join us this winter for a whimsical painting workshop exploring the magical worlds of 20141215_100048primitive art, folk art,  and expressionist art, and a creative writing workshop where we read and write a range of winter poetry, magical stories, and imaginative personal essays.

(Science takes a break this winter, but will return in spring.)

Art workshop will be held on Tuesday evenings starting mid-January, and Winter 2013 to 2014 696run for eight weeks.

Creative Writing workshop will run on Thursday evenings and also run for eight weeks.

Let’s look forward to snowdropssnowdrops, crocuses, tulips and the myriad delights of birds singing, sun shining, weather brightening as we plant seeds early this March and watch those first sprouts push up, those tiny closed buds on trees swell and burst open. This spring in our new Planet Earth series, we’ll study Gems, Crystals, and Minerals, which runs for eight weeks starting March 4.

Also once more we run the new Online Creative Writing workshop, Create a Magical World.

Winter 2014 Workshops Are Here

pansy-smallWelcome to Winter 2014! & Happy New Year–in this so very special and exciting new year, the first (in nineteen) that started with a Capricorn New Moon in this particularly luminous month with 2, not one perigee moons/supermoons!  (See EarthSky for more on Perigee Moons or Supermoons.)

And our workshops will begin around the time of the Wolf Moon or Old Moon the week of January 14. The workshop schedule for upcoming January and February workshops is posted, please see the Calendar page.

This January & February in our Amateur Astronomer series, we’ll study Winter Stars and Planets, which runs for six weeks starting Jan 14. 

Mandala Universe (Circle and Spiral) Art and Poetry, which celebrates circles, spirals, and patterns of repeating in nature and poetry, runs for six weeks starting Jan 16.

From Journal to Essay, the  non-fiction creative writing workshop which helps young writers transition easily to essay-writing from informal journal-writing, also runs for six weeks, starting Jan 18.

Also Launching the New! Online Creative Writing workshop, Create a Magical World.
